Small purple, blue or red veins,
sometimes called “spider veins”, can occur anywhere on the
legs or even the face. Varicose veins are larger veins,
sometimes raised and are usually blue in color. Both types of
veins can be caused by a variety of reasons. Some are
hereditary, some are caused by trauma to the legs, still
others result from long periods of standing or sitting. More
women than men develop this condition and pregnancy and
hormones can contribute to this as well. The use of support
hose, weight control and exercise can be helpful. |

In most cases, though, a
technique called Schlerotherapy is most useful in
treating leg veins. In this technique, a very fine needle is
used to inject a solution directly into the vein. The solution
causes the blood in the vein to disappear or become less
obvious.
Before the treatment, a complete medical history will be taken
and a consent form will be reviewed with the patient. Often,
multiple treatments are needed depending on the extent of
veins present. Usually a “test” will be done prior to more
extensive treatment. This is to make sure adverse reactions to
not occur. While the majority of people report little to no
discomfort, some do have a reaction to the solution injected.
Some of the more common side effects are: itching, burning,
hyperpigmentation, blistering (which may result in some
scarring), pain and bruising. For these reasons, an informed
consent must be obtained before treatment can begin.
Insurance companies do not cover these treatments, but they
are very affordable and since treatments take place over a
period of time, there is not a large amount of money needed up
front. |
